Student Clubs/ Organizations

Northern Oklahoma College has a large number of student organizations on the campus which represent many fields of interest. While students should be primarily concerned with academic work, college staff hopes that students will take advantage of the opportunity to become affiliated with those organizations which are of special interest. Student organizations are listed by categories.

General Student Organizations

AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENT ASSOCIATION 
    This association strives to establish and promote a positive and welcoming environment for all cultures, not only African-American, by coordinating planned activities, and by ultimately creating a supportive atmosphere.

AGRI-BUSINESS CLUB 
    This club is composed of students interested in any phase of agriculture. During the year the group makes field trips and attends agriculture and livestock shows both in and out of Oklahoma.

ART FORUM
    The purpose of ArtForum is to encourage interest in and promote understanding of the visual and creative arts.

BAND 
    The College Band is composed of experienced instrumental musicians. The band regularly plays at school activities and provides an excellent opportunity for those interested in improving their musical techniques.

CIVITANS 
    Open to all students desiring to develop a strong sense of civic pride and community, the Campus Civitan Club strives to provide members with a broader knowledge of public affairs and community needs and to prepare them for intelligent leadership and cooperation in solving civic and community problems. The club selects projects to meet the particular needs of the community.

COLLEGE CHOIR 
    The choir is open to all students who possess musical ability to qualify for membership. The choir regularly performs at school activities and provides an excellent opportunity for those interested in improving their musical techniques.

DMAD CLUB 
    The purpose of this organization is to prepare college students to enter the multi-media profession and associated fields and/or to be better informed in the multi-media industry.

ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY CLUB
    This club is open to all students enrolled in one of the college’s technology programs or technology classes or who are pre-engineering majors. The purpose of the organization is to represent engineering technology programs during campus activities, to provide educational information to its members, to promote engineering technology on campus and to the general public, and to inform area industries about Northern Oklahoma College’s engineering technology graduates.

    This club is open to all students interested in traditional or digital photography.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ASSOCIATION 
    Created to promote understanding and to further knowledge of different cultures, the ISA members help new international students adjust to life in the United States. The ISA is open to all interested students at Northern.

INTRAMURAL COUNCIL 
    The aim of the Intramural Council is to provide an opportunity for every physically able individual at Northern to participate in his/her favorite type of competitive athletics. Some of the activities offered are flag football, softball, volleyball, tennis, pool, and racquetball.

LAMBDA ALPHA EPSILON 
    American Criminal Justice Association— Lambda Alpha Epsilon is the national criminal justice fraternity devoted to the furtherance of professionalism in all areas of criminal justice. Membership is composed of persons who are formally committed to the field of criminal justice through either their education or their employment.

LAW ENFORCEMENT CLUB 
    All persons preparing to enter law enforcement or associated fields, or who are now active members of a police organization and enrolled at Northern Oklahoma College, are eligible for active membership. The purpose of this organization is to help college students prepare to enter the law enforcement profession or associated fields.

LITERARY CLUB 
    The Literary Club coordinates and publishes Salt Fork Review, a yearly online magazine featuring student and faculty contributions of art and creative writing. The club also sponsors events during each school year. Any student interested is welcome to join.

MATH CLUB 
    The Math Club was founded to promote understanding and knowledge of mathematics and to provide information for students about professional fields open in the sciences.

MAVERICK MAGIC 
    The purpose of Maverick Magic is to encourage and promote school spirit while supporting athletics through decorating, promoting student involvement, being ambassadors for recruits, and participating in public relations.

MUSIC BUSINESS CLUB 
    The Music Business Club is an organization comprised of students who have claimed music business as their major or students who have an interest in music and the music business industry. The mission of the Music Business Club is to allow students hands-on experience with the coordination of and fund-raising for special events within the entertainment industry.

NATIVE AMERICAN CLUB 
    Popularly known as Northern Thunder, this club was organized to promote understanding and knowledge of Indian heritage, culture, and traditions. In addition, it seeks to encourage social exchange between Indian students and the non-Indian community.

NOC RODEO ASSOCIATION 
    This association provides students who enjoy the sport of rodeo and horsemanship the opportunity to continue to enjoy fellowship and recreation in a competitive manner. The association welcomes members who wish to compete as well as those who want to assist the association.

PEER COUNSELING PROGRAM 
    Students are trained in communication skills, confidentiality requirements and leadership skills to empower fellow students in problem solving, decision making, and coping strategies.

RADIO CLUB 
    The chief activity of the Radio Club is the operation of the college on-campus radio station, KAYE-FM. The club is in charge of regular daily broadcasts on campus.

ROUSTABOUTS 
    Membership in this organization is secured through competitive tryouts. This group appears many times a year in programs throughout the north central part of the state. The purpose of the group is to serve as Northern’s goodwill ambassadors at various school and community events.

STUDENTS AGAINST DESTRUCTIVE DECISIONS
    The purpose of the SADD organization is to educate students concerning the problem of drinking and driving and to help each student become aware of the alcohol problem as it exists on the local, state and national level.

STUDENT NURSES ASSOCIATION 
    All students enrolled in the Northern Oklahoma College nursing program for the preparation of professional nurses are eligible for membership. The purpose of this pre-professional, nonprofit student organization is to aid in the preparation of student nurses for the assumption of professional responsibilities.

THE MAVERICK 
    The Maverick staff publishes the student newspaper twice a month in the fall and spring semesters. Staff members are chosen from the journalism classes at the beginning of each semester to write and edit the news. The staff also takes field trips and attends news clinics.

 


 

National Honorary Organizations

DELTA PSI OMEGA 
    Delta Psi Omega is the national junior college drama fraternity to recognize the students that have performed outstanding work in drama. The students are selected by vote of the present membership. Membership is by invitation only.

KAPPA BETA DELTA 
    Kappa Beta Delta is the international honor society for the ACBSP Accredited Business Programs. The purposes of the society are to recognize scholarship and accomplishment among associate degree seeking students in the area of business. KPD serves to encourage and promote personal and professional improvement and a life distinguished by honorable service.

PHI THETA KAPPA-XI THETA CHAPTER 
    Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society for two-year colleges. To be eligible for active membership, a student must have completed fifteen hours of core classes with a grade-point average of not less than 3.50.


 

 Political Organizations

YOUNG DEMOCRATS 
    The Young Democrats organization strives to encourage an interest among the students in the Democratic Party and promote an understanding of the party’s history and principles. It presents aims for which the party is striving and helps secure the election of the party nominees.

YOUNG REPUBLICANS 
    The Young Republicans strive to bring young people into the Republican Party and to provide an opportunity for them to find political expression and recognition. The organization’s aims are to train young people to become effective political workers and to encourage participation in the election of the Republican Party nominees. Young Republicans also collect, analyze, discuss, and disseminate information concerning political affairs.


 

 Religious Organizations

FELLOWSHIP OF CHRISTIAN ATHLETES 
    The Fellowship of Christian Athletes is a nondenominational program to confront youth with the challenge and adventure of following Christ in the fellowship of the Church. Although the national focus of the organization is upon athletes and coaches, all students and staff are encouraged to participate. It provides an opportunity for spiritual growth for all students at Northern Oklahoma College.


 

 Off-Campus Religious Organizations

Off-campus religious organizations are not directly connected to the college but work in close proximity and connection to the college to provide avenues for religious service, spiritual growth, and education. They offer opportunities for religious counseling and fellowship among students.

BAPTIST STUDENT MINISTRIES 
    The Baptist Student Ministries is a distinctive denominational ministry. Its function is to remind each student of his/her responsibility to Christ, the church, and the individual’s obligation as a Christian citizen of the world. It provides inspiration, information, and fellowship, which is the spiritual climate essential for Christian growth while in college.

CATHOLIC STUDENT ASSOCIATION 
    The Catholic Student Association explores the Catholic faith both for Catholic students and faculty and others interested in learning about the faith. Social activities are scheduled throughout the year.

CHURCH OF CHRIST CAMPUS YOUTH FELLOWSHIP 
    The purpose of Campus Youth Fellowship is to provide suitable opportunities for students and faculty of Northern Oklahoma College or other connected individuals to study or make inquiry into the Christian faith, to offer an opportunity for devotion or worship, and to provide opportunity for other fellowships.

WESLEY FOUNDATION 
    The Wesley Foundation is the organized educational ministry through which the United Methodist Church makes a unified approach to the students at Northern. It provides a program of teaching, worship, recreation, counseling, and enrichment for students and faculty at Northern.

CIVITANS

LITERATURE CLUB 
    The Literature Club promotes the appreciation of literature. Members discuss literature, share books, and view films. Anyone interested in literature is eligible for membership.

MULTICULTURAL STUDENT ASSOCIATION 
    This association strives to establish and promote a positive and welcoming environment for all cultures by coordinating planned activities and improving communications, mentoring, and ultimately creating a supportive atmosphere.

PSYCHOLOGY CLUB 
    The purposes of the Psychology Club are to serve students interested in the field of psychology and to enhance a person’s sociological imagination through charities and activities benefiting the community. Membership is open to anyone who is interested in psychology.

SINGLE PARENTS ASSOCIATION 
    The Single Parents Association is designed to organize support, influence personal and educational growth, and promote social interaction with others. Members must be single parents, or persons with parenting concerns. Children of single parents are also encouraged to join.
